The George Floyd Incident & Season to Soar

By Kymbria Young, Founder

Greetings,

I write this message from a deeply personal place. When I learned of George Floyd’s death, I held my Black son tightly and cried. The grief I felt wasn’t rooted in shock—but in painful familiarity. His death was a brutal reminder of the harsh realities my son may one day face simply because he was born Black in America. It was a reminder of the injustices that many in our community experience every single day.

Institutional oppression is at the heart of this issue. Dismantling it is not only my life’s calling but the very reason I founded Season to Soar.

Like many of you, I’ve experienced injustice firsthand. I’ve heard the stories, witnessed the pain, and felt the rage. But instead of being consumed by sorrow or anger, I choose to channel these emotions into purpose. Season to Soar is my vehicle for change—a platform to uplift underserved communities and fight back against systemic inequity.

My work with Season to Soar isn’t just a job—it’s an extension of my civic duty. And I invite you to see your involvement in the same light—not just as volunteering, donating, or supporting a cause, but as a meaningful way to practice your own civic responsibility.

Only you can determine your capacity. If you’re already giving your all, I thank you—your efforts truly matter. But if you feel called to do more—whether it’s offering your time, skills, resources, or deepening your engagement—I challenge you to step forward. Our communities are in need. Your contribution can be the spark for real, lasting change.

When unjust systems—education, justice, housing, and healthcare—send a message that underserved Black and Brown communities don’t matter, our collective action says otherwise:

  • Our Soar Pack School Supplies show youth that their education matters.

  • Our Care Packs show families that their health and well-being matter.

  • Our Global Leadership Youth Program shows young people that their voices matter.

True leadership brings people together.

The injustice we face today stems from generations of systemic oppression—and it will take generations of civic-minded leaders to overcome it.

Let us continue building programs that shape those leaders. And let us serve as the examples they can look to for inspiration.

With gratitude and purpose,
Kymbria Young-Anning

A Story That Stays With Me

By the Founder of Season to Soar

Dear Friends,

When I think about the mission of Season to Soar and the communities we serve, one story always rises to the top. I’d like to share it with you.

As the founder of Season to Soar, I wear many hats—overseeing planning, marketing, fundraising, and programming. One of my responsibilities led me to a school in Chicago where we were preparing to launch our Global Leadership Youth Program. I scheduled a meeting with the school principal to better understand the challenges their students faced, hoping to tailor our support in a meaningful way.

I expected to hear concerns like low math scores or the need for after-school tutoring. Instead, the principal looked at me and said:

“Many of our students suffer from poverty and homelessness.”

These were children between the ages of 5 and 13—kids who should be worrying about recess and spelling tests, not housing insecurity, hunger, or the trauma of losing loved ones to gun violence. It was a sobering reminder of why we do this work.

Season to Soar exists to bring hope, resources, and opportunity to youth facing these unimaginable challenges.

Today, we work with over 100 young people across three countries—the United States, Ghana, and China. In Chicago’s most underserved neighborhoods, we serve more than 50 students through our Global Leadership Youth Program, which equips them with leadership skills and a global perspective.

Our program empowers students to:

  • See themselves as global citizens

  • Engage in meaningful cross-cultural dialogue

  • Explore shared global challenges

  • Take real-world action through service-learning projects

These students are not just learning leadership—they are practicing it by addressing real issues in their communities and around the world.

When you support Season to Soar, you ignite hope. You help shape future leaders. And your impact travels far beyond borders.

Whether you donate, volunteer, or simply share our story—your involvement makes a powerful difference.

Thank you for believing in our mission.

Warmly,
Kymbria Young-Anning
